Attributions of the Christian

We are free in the sense of attending this or that congregation, but obligated in the sense that no believer can refrain from assembling together (cf. Heb. 10:24-25). If we fail in this basic duty, we deprive ourselves of the means of grace and deprive the other brothers and sisters of enjoying our communion.

It is the duty of every Christian to diligently use the means of grace communicated by Jesus Christ, for his/her personal edification and those under his/her responsibility. (a) Reading the Word, (b) Prayer, (c) Reading good Biblical books, (d) Meditation, etc. We need the Bread of Life and the Water of Life. Our daily feeding on the Word of God, resorting to the presence of God in prayer, occupying our minds with things above and with all that is pleasing to God is indispensable.

Serving the church with the gifts that Christ has given to each one is also the duty of every Christian. The exercise of spiritual gifts must be done with humility, in diversity, maintaining unity, for the edification of the church (Rom. 12, 1 Cor. 12, Eph. 4, 1 Peter 4). The universal priesthood of all believers carries with it the following implications:

  1. That every vocation is sacred;
  2. That our life is a service to the glory of God;
  3. That all our dealings are ministerial: we are called to serve. Therefore, we must seek the relationships and professions in which we can be most useful. God also bestows spiritual gifts on each church member for the purpose of building up the body of Christ. Therefore, everyone has an obligation to diligently exercise their gifts for the spiritual growth of the church, the furtherance of God's kingdom in this world, all for the glory of God.
  4. Finally, it is the duty of every Christian to submit to, respect, encourage and support officers, provided they remain faithful to the Scriptures.

The Duties of Christian Servants
Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only those who are good and gentle but also those who are dishonest. For it is a commendable thing if, being aware of God, a person endures pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector". All this needs to occur in love.
If he refuses, the apostle Paul is stern (1 Corinthians 5:5) "you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus."
